Reflection on Sources.

While I was doing my research I got stressed. I could not find most of the things that I wanted to. I had to keep re-wording my questions and statements. I then got on to New York Times and found several articles on what I was looking for. When I found that website I was so relieved because I just kept coming to dead ends. I feel that the most useful and trustworthy articles and website that I had found was on the New York Times website. They used quotes that people said, books, authors, and even team players that had been troubled by sexual segregation once. The article showed what the people went through and how they got to where they are now. Most of my articles and websites were not bias. That is one good thing about the New York Times articles. They just told about the people, what they said, what they do, and what they went through to get there. This was a great experience for me and im glad that I am not the only person that feels the same way.

Reflection.

Through all of my research I have learned so much more than what I had expected. This research has brought me to a stronger feeling about this topic. It amazes me to see how far women have come due to one law- the XI law of 1972. I was shocked to know that there is no job that lets women get equal payment as men. The statistics from the women sports compared to the men sports are very similar. I also learned that in some sports women have to be taught to think like a man in the game. This would be very hard but they can still do it. I am glad to have done this topic so that when somebody ask me a question about sexually segregated sports I am knowledgable to answer the question. It has been a privalege for me to learn these  great facts. There is one question that I did not have in the beginning but I have now; Since women are improving more and more each year, why doesn't the government go ahead and make things equal? Hopefully, from viewing and reading my blog, you will understand why I feel the way I do about this topic. This is not just some random topic, it is very heartfelt. I will leave you with one thing in mind- What if you wanted to do something but you were being held back just because of a certain characteristic that you cannot change?

Why are sports segregated by sex?

Sports being segregated by sex can be benificial but also crucial. Have sports co-ed can increase the teams performance. You have girls that are more educated at a particular sport than a male is. The same goes for the men. If they are not coincided then each team is missing out on another player that is well at playing. This could be a bad thing also. Sports can be about height and weight of a player. The authors of Playing with the Boys:Why Seperate Is Not Equal in Sports, Eileen McDonagh and Laura Pappano state that "We should not sort athletics by what sex they are, but rather by their skill." This book shows how the mind thinks. The mind thinks that women are the weaker sex while the men are the stronger sex. It gives several examples to why things are unfair. One example is tennis. In tennis women can only play three sets in the majors while the men can play five. Women sports are becoming more popular every season but just like anything else that deal with gender, this is controversial. Due to the XI law of 1972, women are able to participate more and more gradually. There are some things that are an equal ratio of males to females such as medical school. When doctors first came about it was men (medicine man). This originated from the Indians. Now women are just as equal to be in the medical field just like men. I want to know how far males and females have come over the years.

Title IX, Education Amendments of 1972 states that there should be no discrimination. Not only in education but in sports, jobs, careers and more. The reason why there are no set rules that males and females cannot do a specific thing is due to this amendment. If this amendment was never made then things would remain the same as they did in the early 1900's. Males did the harder work while the women did the easier work. Thanks to this amendment there are female football teams, male tennis players, and female hockey teams.

One of my current teachers, Mrs. Koegel, told us in my College 105 class that she used to be a principle of a school. When she would go to the conferences and meetings, she would be the only female principle out of the males. She said that the men would make fun of her because being a priciple is not a lady's place to be. She did not let there words affect her. After several years, some of her female friends became principles so that left her not being the only female. The male priciples could not argue any more since she was no longer the only female. Now there is no problem with male and females both being principles. Thanks to people like Mrs. Koegel. I got this information from Mrs. Koegel that works with Horry Georgetown Technical College of Conway.

Women have really upped there game since the 1900's. In 1979 women only made 62% as much as the men did. The 2008 statistics show that women make 80% as much as men do. This is just an average on how much women make compared to there male competitions. Some jobs let women earn up to  97% of what the men do. This is still not quite 100% but statistics do show that women are more likely to quit. They also say that women are less work experienced than males are. Just being a house wife, the percentage has changed. It may not be high but from 1987 to 2008 the percentage went from 18% to 26%. In my blog I would like to know if the way people were raised affects the way they interperet a topic as an adult.

In the New York Times paper " Wambach Tried to Put Her Injury Behind Her" by Jack Bell, it tells a little about her background. As a kid in high school, all she knew was high school soccer. She was 15 years old when she was first introduced to international football. That was the very first soccer game she had went to; Santos and Benfica was playing against each other. From that day forward she knew that her dream was to become a professional soccer player. Her family must have taught her determination because she was determined to be a professional soccer player. If her family did not raise her with determination then she would probably not be as far as she is right now.

In another one of New York Times papers, "It’s His Year, but Nadal Is Pleased to Win One for His People" by Harvey Araton tells about a male tennis player. Nadal says "I win here for alot of people, not just for me." I feel that this quote shows that he respects other peoples opinions and not just his. He is not playing tennis just because he enjoys it but also for the fans. When he says "alot of people" this could mean his fans, family, friends, competitors, or even his coaches. Throught his tennis playing years, he never once given up. Even at the games he lost, he just pushed himself to strive better the next time. He has a great skill of determination and success.

In another New York Times headlines, "A Go-Slow Approach in Patrick’s Second Year in Nascar" Danica Patrick shows simplicity. She is very motivated towards what she enjoys. She is the first female in history to participate in Nascar. She was grown up around racing and understanding both perspectives- male and female. Her parents taught her to respect how other feel and thats what she did. She respected the audiences opinion on her being a race car driver but she still did not let that stop her. She has a strong skill of perserverence. She never gave up and she is doing better than what anybody thought she would have done. Some of the other race car drivers are proud of her even though she is competition. I respect her for all she has done in the past few years.

According to these few passages and quotes, I feel that the way people were raised has an affect on there perspective. It may not be a great contribution but it does play a role. My parents taught me to just be me and have fun; to not obsticals slow me down on doing what I think is right. On the other hand, one of my friends, Hope, was raised with good ettiquette and was taught that your a girl. We both think alike but when it comes to sports we are different. I want things to be equal- guys and girls can play together. She wants things to be sexually segregated- girls do one sport and guys do another. From personal experience the way you are raised is a contribution to your thinking process.

This quote is from one of the New York Times topic "Wambach Tried to Put Injury Behind Her" It was published on September 22, 2008.

Abby Wambach played soccer for the Women's Professional Soccer allocation draft in China. She was out for several weeks and never was dissapointed. She felt that it was just an obstical that she had to get over to succeed. While over there, she shattered her leg. When she got back to America many people asked her questions. This was one of the quotes. There are many things that i feel she is trying to say in this quote. One thing she is saying is that soccer is just one of many women's professional leagues. There are other professions in the professional leagues for women. Women are also improving there popularity level in the Athletic department. Not only is soccer a job or even a career for some but its for every sport. Each sport is a wonderful thing to be in; it livens up the audience and increases popularity.

This quote came from the New York Times paper called "It’s His Year, but Nadal Is Pleased to Win One for His People" It was published on August 17, 2008.

I feel that this quote from Nadal- professional male tennis player- is ver significant. Usually people see women playing tennis; whether it be professional or on a high school team. This man is not ashamed to say that he plays tennis. According to the quote from him, he has put his time and effort not only for him but also for the fans and other team players. He also says "the slams are more important." Tennis is not all about what you like, or the fans, its about how well you do. To play the sport of tennis you have to what positions to take and how to handle the ball at different circumstances and angles. Women are usually good at this but Nadal goes to show that men can do it also.

In the article Girls Playing Hockey: It's No Longer a Man's Game, states that "It's not just the numbers that matter, the skill every year has gotten better and better." This Quote is from Christopher Edelen. I totally agree with Edelen. The women have to go through many hours of hard work, training, and skill building to be able to succeed in Hockey. We have to learn the rules, regulations, and stand point. To add more on, the women MUST learn how to play and think like a guy would do out on the ice. The amount of women helps to improve the number of female sports but it is how much they succeed that really counts. Women, I feel, have improved drastically over the past century. Hockey is a good example of how far we have come and to show that it may not be easy doing a " man's job" but we still succeed and perform just as well.

This article is called "Girls Playing Hockey: It's No Longer a Man's Game." The first game of Hockey was played by men in the 1800's. Over the decades women began to play more so they came up with a Woman's World Ice Hockey Championship. There first game was in 1990. There were over 6,000 women that signed up for it. In 2008 over 50,000 women signed up to play in the Championship. Before 2008 girls could only play with there high school or local hockey teams but now women can go national. The rules have not changed for the woman's hockey teams. The rules remain the same as if they were guys. The females are trained to think and play just like a guy since it was originally a males sport. This is a good step up for the girls in sports. This shows that girls can do it to.

This is a picture of a player from a team in The Detroit Women's Baseball League. Yes, Baseball, not Softball. This leauge is still around; you have to be 18 years or older to join any team in this league. Two semi-pro teams are The Detroit Diesel and The Detroit Danger. I feel that this picture shows that girls do want to play baseball. I know that there is softball but softball is basically baseball going easy on the girls. Girls should not be treated differently-no softball. First there was baseball and girls like to play it, people thought that it was to tough for the girls so they came up with softball. I think that girls can handle it and do not need any leage way. Softball is ok to have as long as the rules do not change due to the female team-mates. This league has been around since the early 1990's and is still growing strong. This league is supported by the AWBF, AAU Women's Baseball, and USA Baseball. On this website, it shows the statistics for the New York Sharks- Woman's Tackle Football Team. These statistics are from the 2009 season with a total of three games. The best passing and rushing player of the season is Karen Mulligan with a total pass of 619 yards and a total run of 107 yards. The best receiver is Lauren Pringle with a sum catch of 228 yards. The best defense player is Mandy Oppel with a grand total of 17 tackles and 1 intercept from the season.

This quote goes to show that the women are able to play football. We may not be as built up as men are but we can still do it. This is clearly not a gimmick because it is for the teams interest. Like Rory Edwards said, different look and name but the same team. The Atlanta Xplosion Women's Professional Tackle Football Team is about cooperating with the team and enjoying the sport. Thats what it is all about.

I know that football known as a males sport but as you can see, a girl is playing too. This girl looks like she is dedicated to the game just as much as any other player would be. This quote goes to show that having a girl around does not change the moral of the game or sport. Like Dale Earnhardt Jr. stated, since she is the first girl in history to participate in Nascar Racing, she did well. Once we get the hang of the game then we will be just as competitive.

In the article that I got this quote from states that over the past two years that Danica Patrick has been in racing she has had some downfalls. She has brought herself back up to the top. She entered Nascar at the age of 28. She placed 35th in last years Nationwide race in Daytona. The month before, in California, she ran in the top 15. At the Homestead-Miami Speedway in the Nationwide season finale in November she finished 19th. This goes to show that girls are capable. It might take us some work and getting used to but we can do this just like Danica Patrick has done and will continue to do.

Some people are against this topic just like these people are against another topic. As a whole, most people feel that girls or guys should not interfere with the others doings. People up north and in the western part of the U.S were raised different than the people down south. Down south, guys and girls were raised together while people up north were raised with more etiquette. We learned more of how to have fun than to worry about who is coming. The way you were brought up can affect the way you feel about my topic.

In this picture it shows how guys and girls come together. I feel that we should all come together and enjoy what we do. For example, some girls like Nascar but no girl ever raced in it because that would have been different. In 2009 Danica Patrick stood up and changed racing. Now there is a girl racing with all the guys. Males and females should be able to interact without disappointing people. You should not feel weird or strange for doing something that you enjoy. As long as you like what your doing then do it for the fun, not because of what others think. Just like Danica Patrick did. She has not won a Nascar race yet but she has finished in the top 5. She is just as good as any of the guys. This picture persuades that we are all just as capable of each other. No matter the sex orientation.

My favorite word in my Wordle is Passion. Passion is a strong positive feeling towards something. Passion is a very fragile feeling that you have to find. Another word I like it Fun. I like to go out and do what I like to do; I do not let people stop me in any way. This is how everybody should feel. Ask yourself these questions. Do you want your passion crushed? What I Want To Know About My Topic

I want to know what affect people to feel the way they do about my topic. This will help me to better understand why people act the way they do and say the things they say when I bring this point up in a question. I want to know how you, as a person, feel about this topic. This will give me a better outlook on what other people think and how they interpret this. I want to know why certain things were meant for males and certain things were meant for femals in the 1900's. This will help me to get a gist of where segregating sex originated from. I want to know how people were raised. This will help determine if the way people were raised affects how the person feels about this subject as a teen, adult, or elder. I want to know how far we have come. This will help me to understand my topic better. I want to know what peoples extracurricular activites are and who attends. This will aid me into understanding what people are around and this affects there answer to my question.  The reason why I want to know these few things is to help me, as a blogger, to spread mine and other peoples personal impressions. These questions will inform me better as a person. It will give me a different outlook and understanding of how other people feel and why things are segregated by sex.

What I Already Know About My Topic

My topic is about girls or females being able to participate in male activities. I, Gabrielle Conner, feel that things should not be sexist; a guy can do what a girl can do and a girl can do what a guy can do. I can understand that some festivities or male performances are specifically for males but the activites that do not specify which gender should be attending, should be for both genders. If the festivity is origanally intended for males, but does not specify, there will be some females participating. In the 1900's males and females did NOT participate in the same actions. Women usually did the cooking and house work while the men did the yard work and got the food. People assume that women are not capable of handling what a man does because we are not built like them. When the fact of the matter is, we can. Some say that the women had the manageable labor while the men did the concentrated chore. As the years progressed, women became more activily involved in what the men typically did.Now a days women and men do a little bit of everything. There are still some circumstances in which they can not intertwine. Most guys think that girls should do what girls do; they do not need to bother the guys. There are a few guys in which it really has no affect on them as long as they get to do what they intetially planned. The way you were raised also depends on your outlook of this topic. If you were raised without having rules, no chores,  getting anything you wanted, and not having to earn anything, more than likely your going to stay away from boy things. If you were raised where you had house hold rules, were not inside all the time, had to earn what you wanted then you will probably be like me; enjoying the outside, hanging with the guys, and enjoying male activites. This theory of mine is the same with guys. This is similar to people being racist. When people are being racist or saying racist jokes, some people think its wrong just like some people think that it is wrong for girls to associate with male activities. To others, it may not affect them; they just go on about there day. Just like when girls engage in male festivites, it does not have any regard or disturbance to some folks. Everybody is different but we need to understand both sides, male and female. Doing unisex activites helps to better understand each other.

The Story Behind My Topic

Should girls and guys be able to participate in activities that were intended for the opposite sex? Examples: Hunting, Dance, Fishing, Fashion, Racing, Archery.

The story behind this topic

                As a kid, I was not like most typical girls. Most young girls parents dresses them with matching hats and bow in there hair, but I did not. I wore camouflage over-alls and t-shirts most of the time. Most parents will not let there kids get dirty, let alone go outside but my parents did. I was raised up being around boys and guys; whether it was my mom and dad’s friends or my cousins and friends, so I have grown to enjoy male type of activities. My family is a big fan of Football and Racing. Ever since I was born, I was around Nascar Racing, Motocross, Four-wheelers, trucks, and Go-Carts. I would go with my dad to Race Pulls and watch the race. My dad started taking me hunting and fishing when I turned 2 years old. I could not do much but I still went. Most girls do not shoot guns, but I shot my first gun, a 4-10, at the age of 4. I went to my first turkey shoot at the age of 5 and borrowed my friend Brody’s gun. Growing up around these things has become a part of me and my lifestyle.  As of right now, I personally own 5 guns and I have a hunters permit so I am legal, but I still use some of my dads; I have a Benelli 12-Guage shot-gun, Mossberg 20-Guage, Winchester 270 rifle, Winchester 243 rifle, and a 4-10 shot-gun.  So I ask, Should girls and guys be able to participate in activities that were intended for the opposite sex? I chose this question because you do not typically see a girl hunting, fishing, racing, or going to turkey shoots like I do. These things are more male activities but I believe that that is sexist and a girl is capable of doing what a guy can do. I have had people, guys and girls, give me looks like I ought not to be doing any of those things. When some people hear or find out that I enjoy hunting, fishing, and shooting they judge me. People have even said that I was weird for doing these things; being an outdoors kind of girl does not affect my personality.  At first these comments and looks got to me but I realized that these activities were apart of me. I do not need, and do not intend to adjust and or change for anybody. I am just as good as any guys at these things, if not better. I say that if males and females can succeed at the same thing then they should both be able to participate.
